Orientation Scavenger Hunt - Paul Baeder

This is an orientation day scavenger hunt and fact finding activity. The students will go throughout the campus collecting litter and recyclable items and searching for and recording certain facts. This activity adds two additional elements to the standard student scavenger hunt - it promotes cultural awareness and the Green effort on campus. It is not solely diversity-focused, but instead imbeds a focus on diversity into regular classroom activity.

Hidden Biases - Glenda Hanson

Studies show people can be consciously committed to egalitarianism, and deliberately work to behave without prejudice, yet still possess hidden negative prejudices or stereotypes. So even though we believe we see and treat people as equals, hidden biases may still influence our perceptions and actions. This activity helps students explore their biases in a safe environment and reflect on how these hidden prejudices affect relationship in and out of the workplace. Main activities include a private online activity, personal reflection, and classroom discussion.

Introduction to the Project

Based on feedback from a 2007-08 online survey, the Diversity Team has identified promoting classroom diversity activities as one of its initiatives for 2008-09. The goal of the project is to create a dynamic database of activities to help instructors address issues of diversity.

There are two ways to get in the loop:

Submit an activity that focuses on or incorporates issues of diversity.

How do you include diversity in your curriculum? Fill out the Diversity Activity Template with your favorite activity. Instructional Improvement and the Diversity Team are here to assist you through this process.

Try an activity submitted by another instructor. Then provide feedback and further suggestions.

Look through the database of activities to find one that fits you and your program. Try it out, and then provide feedback about the activity. Instructional Improvement and the Diversity Team are here to assist you through this process.
